Clarkston's Contribution to Commonwealth Games 2014!

Many members will be aware the Malaysian bowlers spent some time at CBTC in preparation for their challenge in the 2014 Games. Perhaps the friendly match with our very own CBTC bowlers and their training sessions here at the club gave them them a wee bit of an edge over some of their opposition!

We would like to congratulate all the athletes who participated and in particular the Malaysian Ladies Team who won Silver at the Games! Here are the medallists in the city recently sharing their delight with club chairman Mark Weir.

Clarkston would also like to congratulate Ali and Chico, two of our top bowlers who made their debut as international athletes at the games, representing Pakistan.

Although the boys did not manage to secure a medal, there is no doubt that they gave their best efforts. They justified their place in the team and made Pakistan, Scotland and Clarkston Bowling and Tennis Club very proud. Well done!

Maylasia Comes to Clarkston!

A fantastic afternoon of bowling was on display at the club this afternoon. Passers by could have been forgiven for assuming the 2014 Games was underway but what they were witnessing was the Malaysian Games squad playing our own CBTC bowlers in a friendly warm up for the Games itself.

Ladies Teams

This week again saw mixed fortunes for Clarkston ladies tennis teams. The first team had a good win against VA Lanarkshire on Tuesday but lost to them in the Scottish Cup on Wednesday.

They must now beat Thorn Park Ladies to qualify as West 5 for the 2nd stage of the Cup. Hopefully the weather will be better next Wednesday!

Also on Tuesday, the ladies second team lost to Thorn Park Ladies first team in the league but the third team scored its third victory in a row with a 5-4 victory over a strong Thorn Park Ladies third team. So once again good luck to all for next week!

Elena Baltacha

Former British number one Elena Baltacha died of liver cancer at the age of 30, her family have announced.

Baltacha was diagnosed with the illness in January, just two months after retiring from tennis and only weeks after she married her long-time coach Nino Severino.

"We are heartbroken beyond words at the loss of our beautiful, talented and determined Bally," Severino said in a statement released by her family.

"She was an amazing person and she touched so many people with her inspirational spirit, her warmth and her kindness."

The statement said Baltacha died peacefully at home early on Sunday morning.

Baltacha had retired from professional tennis last November after a career which had seen her ranked as the British No. 1 for 132 weeks, from December 2009 to June 2012.

Her highest singles rank was 49, which she reached in September 2010.

The Lawn Tennis Association's head of women's tennis Iain Bates said in a statement: "Today we have lost a shining light from the heart of British tennis - a true role model, a great competitor and a wonderful friend.

Ladies Reports

This week saw mixed fortunes for the ladies at CBTC.

The 3rd team won away from home on Monday but on Tuesday the 1sts lost away from home to a powerful Newlands team whilethe 2nds lost a closely fought encounter with local rivals Whitecraigs.

On Wednesday however the 4ths won away from home to Hamilton while  the Cup team won all 5 rubbers at Broomhill.

Tuesday also saw Judy travelling down south with players from Newlands and David Lloyd Renfrew to play for selection for GB vets.

Also this Saturday coming will see Carol Milne representing Scotland in the Four Nations Seniors Tournament at Newlands.

So good luck to Carol!

Clarkston Tennis Coaching: CARDIO TENNIS IS BACK UP AND RUNNING WEDNESDAY 23r...:

CARDIO TENNIS IS BACK UP AND RUNNING FROM WEDNESDAY 23rd APRIL AT 7.30pm!!! HOPE TO SEE A STRONG TURNOUT £5 per person
Gents 4th Team Report

The 4th team played on Monday night and managed to scrape home a 8-1
win against Strathgryffe 6th team.  Iain Cov and Graham Hood blending
well at 1st couple to win 2-1 and then what must be one of the
steadiest couples in all of the 6 teams, John Wilkie and Mark McDermott
winning 3-0 and Justin Notley and Iain Smith pulling out a further
great 3 sets to nil win.
Gents 5th Team Report

Before a ball was hit in the first match of the season for the newly
promoted fifths the grapevine  was in overdrive. The opponents
Cardross, it was rumoured, in recent years had played in a much higher
division, two years ago their coach was playing for Helensburgh in
Division 1 and now was playing third couple in this team!

All these rumours turned out to be true and resulted in a comprehensive
9-0 defeat for the plucky Clarkston team. Despite being clearly out
gunned the home team showed great resilience and throughout the match
began to improve, increasing games won in the second and third sets.
The most impressive display was from debutants Neil and Ehsin who had
three set points at third against the hugely experienced and capable
Cardross pair.

So although not a good start in terms of score the signs for the season
ahead are very positive. We are extremely unlikely to come up against
another team of that ability again in this division and If we can
perform at the levels we showed in this match we should collect a very
healthy set score

Tuesday 22 April 2014

1st gents match completed Thursday night and what a start.  3rd team
played at home to East Kilbride 2nd and it was one of these matches
where half way through, could have gone either way.  Fortunately it
went the way of the home team and we won 7-2!

A mixture of age and experience at both 1st and 3rd couple produced two
excellent 2-1 sets win especially since they both lost the 1st set.
Well done to both John Slack and William Steven and to Peter Robinson
and Graham Hood.

2nd couple was played by Errol Hornstein and Brian Bradshaw.  If anyone
had come down to the club last night during the 3rd set you would have
assumed that they were 2 sets to love down.  Their body language was
should I say.... hunched over!!  Can't fault these guys for a complete
will to win and fighting for ever point.  Not sure their opposition
will ever want to play tennis again!!  Great win guys, knew we could
rely on you as always.
Clarkston Ladies have already been in action in the New Spring League which
has both singles and doubles rubbers. In total, 12 people played and it was
good to see two of our youngsters, Sophie and Caitlin representing the Club.
Thanks to Jill for running the team which lost out narrowly on promotion to
Western 2nds.

But our Ladies over 40s once again started the season in fine fashion by
beating Newlands convincingly to win the over 40's Cup again.  Maybe we will
get to keep the Cup now!

On Tuesday 15th April, Clarkston Ladies 4th team played against a seasoned
Broomhill 3rds. Clarkston lost 3 - 6 but the match could have gone either
way such that I have no nails left! And it was good to see Jenny, Jennifer
and Pippy back in harness which can only be good for the future of ladies
tennis!
