SPORTSMAN'S DINNER NETS
ANOTHER WINNER FOR THE CLUB
On Friday 28th October over a hundred of the great and good for Clarkston were attended CB&TC for our 6th Sportsman's Dinner. After a great three course meal everybody settled down to enjoy the evening entertainment from Sandy Strang and Kenny Clark. The two gents did not let us down with what was consider some of the best speakers we have had at the club. To cap off the night this fundraising venture for the club raised just under £3,500 for the club. Massive thanks must go to Errol Hornstein for the considerable personal commitment he puts into this event, To Gregg McGeoch for his efficient organisation and to Mark Weir for his usual quiz-mastery.

Thanks must also go to our sponsors on the night without whom we would not be able to offer such great prizes and raise so much money for the club. These are Slaters, Bank of Scotland, Hunter Contracts

Speakers are being booked for next year and tables are already being reserved.

NEW COURTS PROJECT PROGRESSING WELL.

Wednesday 9am Wednesday 3pm Thursday 8pm

Two weeks into the project and the transformation of the clubhouse and tennis Section is well under way. The existing tall fencing round the courts has been replaced. The old court surface has been lifted and if that was not enough the clubhouse including the exterior of the junior room has been given a lovely new coat of white and brickwork touched up with red. The old girl has never looked so good.
Apart from the installation of the fencing all the work achieved has been possible thanks to a band of volunteers who have given up days from there holidays or evenings just to help out their club. Without there help this improvement in the club would not have been possible and the next time you are down be sure and give them a pat on the back.. or a pint depending on how flush you feel.
Next week the new courts go down and within the fortnight the project should be completed in time for an opening day on the 5th November.
Massive Thanks from Iain Coventry to the following for their assistance:
Gregg McGeoch, Ross Johnstone, Ross McGhee, Lesley Taylor, Sharon Mitchell, Fraser Hodge, Mark Weir, Katy MacFarlane, Ian Kerr, Iain Smith, Iain Henderson, Darren McNaughton, Mary Gow, Gordon (Christopher, Lucy & Sophie) James, Craig & Jack Beaton,

CLARKSTON SHOWS TRUE CLUB SPIRIT FOR 'MUCK in DAY'

Despite the damp conditions over 30 members of your club took to the grounds armed with shear, loppers, saws, the odd chainsaw and a willing determination to improve their club. The task was simple but significant. After years for being untendend the ground around the club had become overgrown and in some points dangerous for the fabric of the club and courts. By the end of the day over 30 large bags of branches, Ivy and weeds had been sent to compost and the area around the club transformed.

The front of the club also looks 100% better thanks to the efforts of the gents bowlers who gave the 'old girl' a lovely new coat of white. The were only just beaten by the weather and reach as they couldn't tackle the highest points but evertheless a great job done.

An Army Marches on its stomach and never more was true of the 'Muck In Crew'. Big thanks must therefore go to Hazel Doodsoon and her support from the ladies bowling Section for putting on a hearty lunch of Home-made Soup, Sandwiches and cakes... it was a magnificent feast and gave everybody a much needed boost to finish the job.

Whilst the obvious achievement of the day was the improvement of the clubs grounds the day offered so much more in terms of streghtening the club spirit at Clarkston. It was great to see members of all section coming together for the greater good of the club. Clarkston Bowling & Tennis Club is a great place to play and meet friend and the MUCKin DAY was a great example of that.. Thank you everybody

Ross McGhee, Claire & Iain Coventry, Mark Weir, Katy Macfarlane, Alan King, Graeme Stewart, Iain Henderson, Jon Slack, Tom MacPherson, Sharon Mitchell, Lesley Taylor, Graham & Lynsey Hood, Pat Darge, Liz MacDonald, Lynn McGhee, Alan Mcewan, John Wilkie, Mark McDermott, Mr Wylie, Craig Beaton, Jack Beaton, Graham Fulton, Paul Sommerville, Jill Montgomery, Stuart Law, Gordon MacIntyre, Alex Weir, Linda Alexander, Mary Gow, Hazel & Robert Doodson, Ken & Eveleyn McBride, Eileen Robertson, Ross Johnstone

GREGG & LYNNE DELIVER YET ANOTHER FUNDRAISING MASTERCLASS

A big thanks must go to Gregg & Lynne McGeoch for their fantastic 'End of Session Party Night' which was enjoyed by over 100 members, friends and family last Saturday night. Thanks to there efforts your club is now just over £1006 better off.

One of the hightlights of the night was the raffle which rasied over £500 and thanks must go to the local businesses who gave so kindly to our cause and to Gregg & Lynne for taking the time to approach so many companies. If you get the notition please help support our supporters: The Bank @ Muirend, Mearns Castle Golf Academy, Distiction Spa @ Clarkston, Turban Tandoori @ Eastwood Toll

Adding to the profitability of the night was the fact our very own Malcolm Burns offered to 'Spin the Decks' and 'Control the Karaoke' for nothing A massive thanks must go to DJ MalcK B for giving of his time and equipment...he never fails to impress.

So if you see Gregg, his wife Lynn or Malcolm at the club make sure and give them a nod of appreciation or buy them a drink.. they more than deserve it.

Double Top
The Nominated pairs title was retained by Allan Mitchell (l) and Craig Bolling (s) who defeated Malcolm McLaren (l) and newly crowned club champion Jim Meers (s). Allan and Craig forged an early advantage to lead 11 - 2 after 5 ends. Their opponents, winners in 2008, fought back to trail 13 - 15 after fifteen ends, but lost a count of 5 on the 16th end and conceded defeat. With an excellent turnout of members, for what was the only game on, highly appreciative of top class leading from Allan Mitchell the stand out player of the final.

Six For Jim
Finals day was this year sponsored by Anderson McGuire and the players served up some top class performances to enhance the day.
The Championship final today was contested by 2009 winner Jim Meers and defending champion Ian Hudson with the former securing his sixth Championship title at Clarkston. Following close early exchanges Ian pushed ahead to lead 14 - 6 after 10 ends. However, Jim went on to win 11 of the next 13 ends to secure the title with a 21 - 17 win.
In the Vice Presidents, Craig Milliken had a comfortable win against last years runner-up Gordon McIntyre with a 21 - 8 victory.
The Senior Singles brought joy to President Donald Davidson as he upset the punters by defeating favourite Alex Weir. The match was closely fought throughout with Donald holding on to secure the trophy.
Ali Shan proved to hot to handle for Gavin Templeton as he secured a 21 - 10 in this years Murchie Cup.
Congratulations to all on making their respective final.

Murchie's Marauders
Ken Murchies rink of John Burns, Gordon McIntyre and Malcolm McLaren continued their good form to win the 2011 Nominated Fours title. John Burns replaced Iain Thomson at lead and continued in the fine form his predessor had shown during the 1st week.
With victory all but secured prior to the last game following a crushing 12 - 1 defeat of their nearest challengers, Craig Bolling's rink, Ken's rink went on to win the league undefeated. Victory means they will represent Clarkston at the prestigous David Marshall Memorial trophy at East Kilbride. So the marauder's can test their metal against international teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in 2012.

Presidents Honour
Saturday's mixed triples, sponsored by Stewart Martin, saw Lady President Anne Middleton emerge victorious with Tom Devine (lead) and Ken Murchie (skip). Having been undefeated in their section, dropping only 1 point, they defeated Robert Doodsons triple of George Anderson and Moira Keane. It is fair to say that skip Ken enjoyed a degree of good fortune on the the third end of the final.
With gloriousus weather being the order of the day its fair to say that the only losers were those that wern't able to play.

CLARKSTON MINI'S SHINE FOR JUDY MURRAY
The Clarkston boys did the club proud at the Judy Murray Tournament, held at Dunblane Sports Club. Scott Wylie made his way through the draw, after winning all his matches in the group section, the quarters and semis. Scott went on to win both sets in the final 7-6 and 7-4. It was a well matched final with some lengthy rallies in both sets with Scott finding his best tennis in the second set to win with relative ease despite a late surge from his opponent.

Jack Beaton finsihed runner up in his section, winning 5 matches from 7 played. Jack lost his opener 7-6 in a very tight match to eventual Scott Wylie's eventual opponent in the final, and narrowly missing out on a place in the last 8.

Sam Ballantyne also did Clarkston proud, again finishing runner-up in his section of the draw winning 4 matches from 6, again just missing out on a quarter final place.

Andy Murray's granfather, Roy Erskine presented the trophy to a delighted Scott Wylie.

Mens 1st Team End of Season Report

In their best season for a few years, Bradshaw's Bandits completed their league campaign at Western 3.

Having suffered their only defeat, 1-8, at Newlands 2 (division champions) and beating DL West End 5-4, they knew that a 9-0 win at Western would put them into the playoff for promotion to Division 1/1.

The match was hard fought throughout the 3 couples, with "Hard Boiled" and "Bad Bounce" taking 3 at 1st, followed by "The Hedge" and "Bamber the mad giraffe" playing a nail biting 3rd set coming back from 2-5 to win in the tie break. So far so good!

Meanwhile, the old classics "Bentley" and "Rolls Royce" (combined ages circa 105 years), smarting from a shock 1-2 defeat the week before by DL West End (combined ages 25 years), toughed out a 2 set lead after being down breaks in both sets. The final set went with serve until 3-3 when the "Rolls" was broken, and after holding for a 5-3 lead, Western only needed to hold serve to secure the set. With the "Bentley" serving to stay in the set, a couple of bizarre rallies saved set points until the Clarkston duo succumbed and lost out 6-3, but winning the match 2-1. With a final result of 8-1 the playoff place had eluded the "Bandits".

Although slightly disappointed not to make the playoff, it has been a good league campaign, played with excellent team spirit.

Well played Dylan, Euan, David, Steven, Eric, Ross, Derek and Graeme.

Good luck to the 2nd team Squadron against East Kilbride, where a few sets should secure 2nd place and promotion to Division 1/2.

It's Becoming A Habit

Friday night saw Clarkstons bowlers secure more silverware for the club bringing the haul to a total of 6 and its only June!

This time success was in the Hillpark Jubilee Cup where Clarkston defeated a strong Thornliebank rink to retain the trophy. The victorious Clarkston four were Malcolm McLaren, Ken Murchie, Malcolm Burns and Jim Meers.
The Clarkston victory was further sweetened when both teams recorded wins in the Hillpark league to send the club top over local rivals Giffnock.

TRY TENNIS A SMASHING SUCCESS FOR THE CLUB.
On Sunday afternoon the Tennis Section of CB&TC hosted a 'Try Tennis' open day to give local community the chance to test their tennis skills. The response was fantastic and all afternoon the courts were crammed with happy children and families all taking their first steps on the road to Wimbledon. A big thanks must go to Lesley Taylor, Sharon Mitchell, Carol Milne, Ian Henderson, Jill Montgomery, Jon Slack and Syd Willox for giving of their time to ensure that everybody on court had a racket and a chance to play. Our playing numbers were swelled with many taking out membership and the club has benefited in receiving over £1300 in additional subscriptions. For those of you who joined the club thank you and welcome. I hope you have a great time on court.

Pairs Win Through To District Final
Clarkston's pair of Malcolm McLaren and Craig Bolling edged a step closer to the national finals at Ayr with a 21 - 9 win over their Newlands opponents.
A poor start saw the Newlands pair open up a 7 - 1 lead after six ends, but a an excellent counter attack on the next two ends saw Clarkston pick up a 2 and a 7 to take a 10 - 7 lead. The Clarkston pair never looked back and ran out comfortable winners.
They now play the district final at Rutherglen next Thursday against either Burnside or Cathcart.

Senior Bowlers Secure Record 3rd Consecutive Cathcart Top Ten Title
With an emphatic 6 - 2 victory over Cathcart on their own green, Roy Hall (team manager) was naturally overjoyed to have again managed the team to victory. Bowled over by the success Roy thanked all the players who had assisted in securing the silverware for Clarkston.  It's hoped that unlike another treble winning manager that Roy will stay and provide leadership for the title defence in 2012.

The bowlers for this years final victory were Alex Weir, Malcolm Burns, Peter Cation, Mike Hudson, Jim Purcell, Ken Murchie, Wille Paul, Malcolm McLaren, Hugh McGhee and Jim Meers with Roy and Brian Bell playing in earlier rounds.

We had hoped to have a picture of the victorious team but are struggling to find their better side.

The organisers of this fundraising initiative Iain Coventry & Gregg McGeoch have been encouraged by the positive response they have received from club members, their families & friends. Yonex Babes hold their own!!

Just a short update as to how the babes are progressing this year. Due to a third pregnancy (you would think she could plan it better by no.3) sporty babe aka Romana is watching nervously on the sidelines for another season.

Fortunately the babes are managing to hold their own. After three tight fought matches we are sitting 2nd in the table only 2 sets behind the mighty Newlands who have strengthened their team after the crushing defeat by Clarkston last year.

Our goal this year is to stay in the premier league and hopefully return to contend the championship next year with our full complement of babes!

Squadron Soares to Victory

It was a dull Monday night when the call of the squadron came ringing around the eerie atmosphere of Clarkston. With 2 casualties from last years battle, a new look regiment took to the skies! The first couple made up of our new recruits, Nicol "Rampage" Smylie and Greg "Bandit" MacNaughton were determined to get off to a positive start against two Hamilton old timers. With some outright firepower and the odd 'nice touch' the determined looking pair cleared the way taking all three sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-3!

At second couple, two of the squadrons oldest and wisest members joined forces for this one, to lay siege to the enemy. Mark "Wing Commander" Weir and Alastair "Squadron Leader" Smith used all their knowledge and experience of the court in a hard fought battle that saw Hamilton strike the first blow with a first set 6-3 win. Despite this setback the pair fought hard to take the second 6-4 but unfortunatley were narrowly beaten 7-6 in the final set.

The third couple featured the youngest member of the squadron, Graeme "Nipper" Stewart and 3rd teams Josh "GI" Hahn. The pair were raring to go and got off the ground with a blast, winning the first set 6-3. Despite the start, a lackluster 2nd set from the pairing saw them lose 7-5 and then drop to 4-1 down in the 3rd. However a spirited fightback is always possible with "GI" Hahn in the team and the pair fought back to take the set 7-6, winning an excellent tie break decider.

Special mention should also be made to the "Wing Commander" who took some heavy fire from the enemy that nearly had him singing opera, however this couldn't stop the fighter at 2nd.

Overall a great 6-3 win for the squadron, against a strong side coming down from the division above. Onward and upward from here.... TALLY HO!.....
