West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Clarkston’s 2nd Ladies team carved out a fine 7-2 win at home last Tuesday against a seasoned ladies 2nd team from Strathgryffe. In action were Judy and Fiona MacKay (2 sets), Lesley and Jackie (3 sets) and Mary and Linda (2 sets). Meanwhile, across the city, Clarkston’s 1st Ladies team had a marvellous 9-0 win against Broomhill. Clarkston 3rd Ladies were also in action last week on Monday losing away 2- 7 to a strong Thornpark 3rd Ladies team. But the 3rds bounced back with a gritty 9-0 home win on the Thursday against a strong ladies 2nd team from Fort Mathilda. Well done to all team members!

West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Lovely Ladies Trample Thornpark

Clarkston 2nd won an exciting away encounter 7-2 against a strong, experienced Thornpark 2nd team. Jackie back from holiday teamed up with Fiona MacKay at first couple to win 3; Judy and Susan played at second couple to win 3; and Mary and Lesley playing at 3rd managed to snatch the first set then lost a tight 3rd set.

An exellent win overall following on from excellent wins on Monday by the 3rds at Kirktonhill and on Tuesday by the 1sts against Western at home. Still to come in future weeks after she recovers from injury is Sandra who is giving us all great encouragement from the sidelines

West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

First Team, First Defeat!

Given the weather during the build-up to the competitive season, it was pleasant to find a beautiful, sunny evening awaiting the Gents 1st team at Bearsden.  The weather, however, was to be the only beautiful thing about the evening.  Given the departures of some regulars, and the call-up of some “aging” replacements, the first team face the season realistic about the job in front of them.

Three fantastic sets were secured at second couple, where David Evans was ably partnered by a resurgent Eric “Dateinthe” Marginson.  Unfortunately they received little support from the other two couples, leaving a final result of a 5-4 loss. Had this been in the Vets’ League the humane thing would probably have been to put us to sleep!  Dogged determination is needed as we face the next challenge!  Onwards and upwards!

(Late) West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Victory by the Seaside – 9 Sets Won – Cracking Start for Clarkston

Club Captain, Stormin Normin Robinson took his team to Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club for the first tie of the new season. Playing partner Big Al Ace McEwen was looking decidedly nervous 20 mins after the match was due to begin - our leader was missing from action. However, Al was got on the mobile and gave the Captain much needed directions. The Cap was there in seconds, brushing aside desperate requests for a team talk: “No time for such nonsense!” he roared, “Get out and hit the ball”.

This was the only advice needed. New pairing, Craig Relentless Beaton and Sushil Silky at the Net Mohan, were in in devastating form and had the job done inside an hour, losing only a handful points on service games - and Sushil making miraculous on court recovery from a dislocated knee cartilage that popped out and back in during a rally! They took the first match 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Next to battle for the cause were Ian Marathon Man Henderson (he kept all his teeth in this story), and Tom  The Drive Volley Macpherson, who toyed with their opponents in the opening set, before winning it 6-4 then running them into the ground to win the next two 6-0 & 6-1.

With Clarkston having already won the tie, all eyes were on Stormin’ Norman and Big Al. In a match that seemed to last for hours and against one very youthful opponent - who they were both giving at least 30 years each to – they closed down the tie 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.
