1st, 2nd & 3rd Ladies Teams Match Reports

This week has seen mixed fortunes for Clarkston Ladies Teams with defeats for both the 1st and 2nd teams against strong opposition.

Tonight, however, as the sun set in a blaze of glory, the 3rd team recorded a resounding 7-2 victory against local rivals, Busby 2nds.

Well done and good luck to everybody who is playing next week

Gents 4th Team Report

The 4th team played on Monday night and managed to scrape home a 8-1
win against Strathgryffe 6th team.  Iain Cov and Graham Hood blending
well at 1st couple to win 2-1 and then what must be one of the
steadiest couples in all of the 6 teams, John Wilkie and Mark McDermott
winning 3-0 and Justin Notley and Iain Smith pulling out a further
great 3 sets to nil win.
Gents 5th Team Report

Before a ball was hit in the first match of the season for the newly
promoted fifths the grapevine  was in overdrive. The opponents
Cardross, it was rumoured, in recent years had played in a much higher
division, two years ago their coach was playing for Helensburgh in
Division 1 and now was playing third couple in this team!

All these rumours turned out to be true and resulted in a comprehensive
9-0 defeat for the plucky Clarkston team. Despite being clearly out
gunned the home team showed great resilience and throughout the match
began to improve, increasing games won in the second and third sets.
The most impressive display was from debutants Neil and Ehsin who had
three set points at third against the hugely experienced and capable
Cardross pair.

So although not a good start in terms of score the signs for the season
ahead are very positive. We are extremely unlikely to come up against
another team of that ability again in this division and If we can
perform at the levels we showed in this match we should collect a very
healthy set score

Tuesday 22 April 2014

1st gents match completed Thursday night and what a start.  3rd team
played at home to East Kilbride 2nd and it was one of these matches
where half way through, could have gone either way.  Fortunately it
went the way of the home team and we won 7-2!

A mixture of age and experience at both 1st and 3rd couple produced two
excellent 2-1 sets win especially since they both lost the 1st set.
Well done to both John Slack and William Steven and to Peter Robinson
and Graham Hood.

2nd couple was played by Errol Hornstein and Brian Bradshaw.  If anyone
had come down to the club last night during the 3rd set you would have
assumed that they were 2 sets to love down.  Their body language was
should I say.... hunched over!!  Can't fault these guys for a complete
will to win and fighting for ever point.  Not sure their opposition
will ever want to play tennis again!!  Great win guys, knew we could
rely on you as always.
Clarkston Ladies have already been in action in the New Spring League which
has both singles and doubles rubbers. In total, 12 people played and it was
good to see two of our youngsters, Sophie and Caitlin representing the Club.
Thanks to Jill for running the team which lost out narrowly on promotion to
Western 2nds.

But our Ladies over 40s once again started the season in fine fashion by
beating Newlands convincingly to win the over 40's Cup again.  Maybe we will
get to keep the Cup now!

On Tuesday 15th April, Clarkston Ladies 4th team played against a seasoned
Broomhill 3rds. Clarkston lost 3 - 6 but the match could have gone either
way such that I have no nails left! And it was good to see Jenny, Jennifer
and Pippy back in harness which can only be good for the future of ladies
tennis!
