Thursday 1 November 2012

It happens every year and it’s almost unavoidable.... But how much do you actually know about Christmas?
WHAT’S THE PLAN
We hope to have a light hearted quiz based on everything and anything to do with the festive period. There will be mulled wine Mince Pies and all the usual festive nonsense to make you feel more Christmassy than a Bing Crosby pullover stuffed with Mistletoe

WHERE’S IT HAPPENING
The plan is to be in the bar, but if there is sufficient interest we will swing into the main hall.

HOW MUCH TO BE PART OF THE FESTIVE FUN
Tickets are £3 and can be reserved from

Disappointing Result Disappointing Tennis

Clarkston 6 took important points but were disappointed not to take much more in a 5-4 defeat at home to VA Milngavie. The four points mean Clarkston sit in 3rd place just 3 points behind David Lloyd, and with two to play.
Inconsistent and questionable line calls, and poorly timed toilet breaks had a detrimental effect on the quality and enjoyment factor for this tie. A higher than usual number of points were subject to "Play Two", and there were several unexpected exchanges across the net (that were not rallies). A near 10 minute Milingavie toilet brake when Clarkston were 6 love up in a first set tie-break sums up the evening. Craig Beaton commented at the time that it was the least enjoyable tennis he had ever been involved in. Enough said.

Clarkston 6 Win at home to VA Lanarkshire 6 - 3

The slightly younger and hairier Viking warrior look-a-like Ken Dundas stepped up to fill in for Tom MacPherson who is currently away (enjoying the sunshine and rumor has it a tipple or two). Ken partnered Gordon James (who admitted he was "pish" in the first set), and took the match 4 - 6, 6 - 4 and 6 - 2.

Craig Beaton and Neil Miller both served consistently to ensure the next three sets were wrapped up efficiently to take their match and secure the tie with all three sets, 6 - 2, 7 - 4  and 7 - 5.

Alan King and Ewan Wilson had chances to take all three sets. A nervy game cost them in the first and lost on the tie-break. A head-doctor is being called in to counsel the boys after they inexplicably lost the second 6 - 1, but regained their composure to take the last 6-4 an win a valuable point that secured 3rd place in the league.

With a game in hand over 2nd placed David Lloyd, its all to play for.

Narrow Loss 5 - 4 Away to David Lloyd for Clarkston 6

Clarkston were expecting to take little form a tie against opposition that has been trading the top spot in the league with Busby all season. A spirited fight saw David Lloyd take a narrow 5 - 4 victory, but admitted it was their toughest match of the season to date. The 4 points see Clarkston 6 move into 4th place with 4 matches to play. Well done to Ken Dundas, Gordon James, Craig Beaton, Neil Miller, Alan King and Ewan Wilson with each couple sharing in the points.

9 - 0 Victory for Clarkston 6 Away to Craighelen 5th Team (Despite the Heat and the Midge)

The searing heat had no effect on the eternally youthful Tom Macpherson who ran the baseline like David Ferrer and whipped in majestic backhand returns in the style of Richard Gasquet. Gordon James was big on serve, and cat-like at the net; in the process decimating the Helensburgh midge population as he wielded his Babolat like a handcrafted sabre of the finest Toledo steel. Team MacPherson collected all 3 sets in a 1 - 6, 1 - 6, 4 - 6 win.

Craig Beaton and David Wight - replacing (the hen-pecked) Neil Miller - were on court for over 2hrs. After a straightforward 2 - 6 win in the first, Craig and David were forced to come back from 4 - 1 down & 5 - 2 down in the last two sets, to finally come through 6 - 7 and 5 - 7. David possibly set a new club record for serving 28 double faults in the match - well done David! Although, rumour has it Ian Coventry is claiming he still has this venerable honour.

Third couple, Ewan Wilson and Alan King, were 5 -1 down after less than 20 minutes. Captain Craig Beaton's adjoining court pep talk ("if you guys don’t win this, you are both are getting the train home from Helensburgh"), seemed to do the trick - they came back to win 5 - 7. With the threat of West of Scotland public transport still ringing in their ears, they promptly won the next two sets 1 - 6, 2- 6. Well done to all the guys.

Clarkston Men's 6 Struggles Against a Strong Busby 2nd Team

Busby's 2nd team proved too strong for Clarkston 6 in the swealtering heat of Thursday evening. Tom Macpherson and Gordon James had a put on a fighting display against a very strong couple, but were overcome 2-6, 2-6, 7-6. Craig Beaton and Neil Miller were bitterly disappointed to go down 4-6, 4-6, 5-7, while inexcusibly throwing away 20 break points in the process (it was all Neil's fault). Ken Dundas and George Finlayson made ground as each set progressed, but again found the very strong opposition insurmountable and faltered 0-6, 3-6, 4-6.

Dear Auntie & Uncle

I hope that you are all well and enjoying the longer nights. As I am only a little 200 Club daddy Iain & Gregg do not let me stay up that late to see the sunshiny evenings. It was therefore nice for Friday draw to be undertaken in daylight when my little 200club balls could get some much needed Vitamin D.

Daddy Gregg has said that it will soon be my Birthday and I will be 3 years old. I have been promised some new Auntie and Uncles which would be great. If you would still like to be my Auntie or Uncle and have not yet renewed your 200 Club application please contact Gregg or Iain.  It would be great to grow my extended family and build on the £3000+ prize money which we have given out and the £3600+ we have raised for CB&TC.

On Behalf of Daddy Gregg and Iain  and all at CB&TC thanks you for your continued support.

Lots of Love
