Frozen Courts Playing Policy

All members are respectfully reminded to adhere to the rules of the club during very cold weather.

On courts 4,5 & 6 play is prohibited when ice has formed or is forming on courts. No attempt should be made to clear ice from the surface of the courts, nor any salt or other thawing agent used. Play can resume on these courts when thawed. This policy is to protect our courts in the long term and is the professional advice of Leisure Tec, the company who installed these new surfaces on 4,5 & 6.

On the new front hard courts 1,2 & 3, members are asked to use common sense and not attempt to play on any surface that presents a risk to personal safety.

If any member requires further clarification of this notice, please contact the tennis committee.

Charity Tennis Balls

We been contacted by a volunteer with the charity Mary's Meals. They are collecting used tennis balls that can be sent out to developing countries such as Malawi and Liberia as part of the bagpack project.

He points out that, "These balls may be of little value here in Scotland - however, as they’re likely to be the only “toy” some children get this Christmas, they will be very welcome out there!"

The Committee have agreed to support this initiative and suggest any unwanted tennis balls are brought to the Club over the next week and deposited in a box located in the junior room. Many thanks in advance.

Judy Murray & Leon Smith to Officially Open Clarkston's New Courts

We are delighted to announce that our new front courts will be officially opened by Judy Murray (GB Fed Cup Team Captain) and Leon Smith (GB Davis Cup Team Captain) on Sunday 10th November @1pm.

Judy and Leon have been able to take time out of their busy schedules to celebrate this exciting new development with us. Leon is a former member of Clarkston, winning the Gent's Club Championship in 1991 and 1993.

Judy and Leon have consistently demonstrated their committed to the development of junior tennis and recognise how important our new courts will be for us to do this at Clarkston. Judy and Leon will be showcasing a junior tennis clinic, hosting a question and answer session,  and taking time to pose for photographs.

Following these events everyone is invited to stay for social tennis play which will conclude our official court opening afternoon.

Looking forward to having a massive turnout to welcome Judy and Leon. See you all there.

Floodlights Update

Due to a change of circumstances, the contractor will not now be on site this evening and the minor disruption that may have impacted slightly on our club night will no longer be an issue. Weather forecast is for showers at various times across this evening.  Sure that won't be an issue to Clarkston's hardiest of tennis players!

Tuesday 15 October 2013

Floodlights on the New Courts

Members who are considering evening play are advised to check the website diary for scheduled evening matches on courts 4, 5 & 6 as the floodlights on Courts 1, 2 & 3 are not expected to go 'live' until Wednesday evening of this week.

New Courts Complete - Come For a Hit!

We are pleased to announce that play will be allowed from Sunday 13th October.

There are two full doubles courts with orange markings and a singles court with red markings.

We ask that our published tennis rules are adhered to. The committee has agreed that Junior members will now have equal playing rights to Senior members on the new courts and that all players move off court after 30 mins if others are waiting to play. On the grass courts, Juniors must give way if Senior members are waiting to play.

Please try to clear as much sand off your shoes as possible prior to accessing Courts 1, 2 and 3.

The floodlights cannot be used as they still need to be aligned and it is possible that there may be some disruption to a Clubnight as this work requires to be carried out in the evening and cannot take place whilst Vets Matches are being played.

Looking forward to seeing you down on the Courts soon.Details of an official opening occasion will be notified as soon as they are finalised.

Kind regards

The Tennis Committee

The scores after the 8 rounds of matches were very close. Thanks very much to Peter for helping to run the Tournament.

Belated Birthday Wishes...

Alistair Smith was running about like a youngster a few days ago in a vet's tie. He allegedly turned into a sexagenarian this week - 60 years of age! Happy birthday auld yin! (Though some cruel folk are suggesting he may well have shaved a few years of that grand total).

Bearsden Invitational Doubles Tournament & Ladies Summer Doubles Match Reports

Bearsden
On 2nd June, Bearsden Lawn  Tennis Club held its annual invitation doubles tournament, with representation from Clarkston. It was a wonderful, sunny day and the event was well organised with a fabulous afternoon tea provided by the members of the Club itself. After a nail-biting 7-6 semi-final against Lenzie Ladies, Clarkston Ladies brought home the trophy for the first time since 1997 with a tense 6-5 victory over Milngavie Ladies. All that and a sun tan as well, can’t be bad! The winning Clarkston Ladies were Mary Gow and Lesley Taylor who played hard, showcased some great tennis and demonstrated their experience and skill to lift the trophy!

Match Reports
On 4th June, Clarkston Ladies 2nds had an excellent 8-1 win over Fort Matilda Ladies 1sts. Playing were Judy and Susan (2 sets), Lesley and Fiona (3 sets) and Babs and Mary (3 sets).

Next week, is our rest week in Division 1/2, so we will have plenty of energy to help Sandra have a late birthday celebration at the Club! Also, on 4th June, Clarkston Ladies 1sts had a very close match at home against Western 1sts but finally lost 3-6 while the Ladies 3rds at home on the Thursday had an even close encounter with David Lloyd West End 2nds, losing 5-4 overall.

Pat Darge Swinging Sixties!

Despite my fears about the weather the Pat Darge Swinging Sixties was a great success....  and the winners were Kath Gairns (Fort Matilda) and Marlene Waudby (Bearsden) who won the trophies sent by Pat’s sister.

Runners up were Erica Lockett (Stewarton) and Veronica Lambie (Uplawmoor) who won two new cans of balls and the best part... two chocolate oranges! Everybody including the referees also got a chocolate orange!

Big thanks to Ross McGhee and Carol Milne who assisted with the draw, Katy who helped out food arrangements in the morning, and all ladies including those from Clarkston who helped with the washing. Special thank yous go to Lesley Taylor who kept the trophies safe until the last minute!

Fantastic to see so many clubs represented, and a great day was had by all.

West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Clarkston’s 2nd Ladies team carved out a fine 7-2 win at home last Tuesday against a seasoned ladies 2nd team from Strathgryffe. In action were Judy and Fiona MacKay (2 sets), Lesley and Jackie (3 sets) and Mary and Linda (2 sets). Meanwhile, across the city, Clarkston’s 1st Ladies team had a marvellous 9-0 win against Broomhill. Clarkston 3rd Ladies were also in action last week on Monday losing away 2- 7 to a strong Thornpark 3rd Ladies team. But the 3rds bounced back with a gritty 9-0 home win on the Thursday against a strong ladies 2nd team from Fort Mathilda. Well done to all team members!

West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Lovely Ladies Trample Thornpark

Clarkston 2nd won an exciting away encounter 7-2 against a strong, experienced Thornpark 2nd team. Jackie back from holiday teamed up with Fiona MacKay at first couple to win 3; Judy and Susan played at second couple to win 3; and Mary and Lesley playing at 3rd managed to snatch the first set then lost a tight 3rd set.

An exellent win overall following on from excellent wins on Monday by the 3rds at Kirktonhill and on Tuesday by the 1sts against Western at home. Still to come in future weeks after she recovers from injury is Sandra who is giving us all great encouragement from the sidelines

West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

First Team, First Defeat!

Given the weather during the build-up to the competitive season, it was pleasant to find a beautiful, sunny evening awaiting the Gents 1st team at Bearsden.  The weather, however, was to be the only beautiful thing about the evening.  Given the departures of some regulars, and the call-up of some “aging” replacements, the first team face the season realistic about the job in front of them.

Three fantastic sets were secured at second couple, where David Evans was ably partnered by a resurgent Eric “Dateinthe” Marginson.  Unfortunately they received little support from the other two couples, leaving a final result of a 5-4 loss. Had this been in the Vets’ League the humane thing would probably have been to put us to sleep!  Dogged determination is needed as we face the next challenge!  Onwards and upwards!

(Late) West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Victory by the Seaside – 9 Sets Won – Cracking Start for Clarkston

Club Captain, Stormin Normin Robinson took his team to Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club for the first tie of the new season. Playing partner Big Al Ace McEwen was looking decidedly nervous 20 mins after the match was due to begin - our leader was missing from action. However, Al was got on the mobile and gave the Captain much needed directions. The Cap was there in seconds, brushing aside desperate requests for a team talk: “No time for such nonsense!” he roared, “Get out and hit the ball”.

This was the only advice needed. New pairing, Craig Relentless Beaton and Sushil Silky at the Net Mohan, were in in devastating form and had the job done inside an hour, losing only a handful points on service games - and Sushil making miraculous on court recovery from a dislocated knee cartilage that popped out and back in during a rally! They took the first match 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Next to battle for the cause were Ian Marathon Man Henderson (he kept all his teeth in this story), and Tom  The Drive Volley Macpherson, who toyed with their opponents in the opening set, before winning it 6-4 then running them into the ground to win the next two 6-0 & 6-1.

With Clarkston having already won the tie, all eyes were on Stormin’ Norman and Big Al. In a match that seemed to last for hours and against one very youthful opponent - who they were both giving at least 30 years each to – they closed down the tie 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.

Ladies 2 Victorious in Battle with Bearsden

Clarkston Ladies Second Team, who were promoted last season to Division 1 / 2, played their first match last night and edged a worthy 5- 4 win against Bearsden. Playing were Judy, Susan, Lesley and Fiona MacKay, Mary and Lynn.

And a great way to welcome Fiona to Clarkston Tennis for her first match in her first season with us - building on the talent and experience which Susan, Judy and Jackie brought to the team in 2012 and led to promotion for Ladies 2. Players to watch out for in future matches are Jackie and Sandra.

Men's 4 Succumb to Strathgryffe

It was windy, it was tight and the lads gave 110%. All matches ended up 2-1 and could quite literally have gone either way and very nearly did. When the dust settled and the fat lady had finally knocked it on the head Strathgryffe came out 5-4 winners - though to be fair tennis was the real winner tonight in a very meaningful sense.

"It's all about bounce-back-ability," stated Mark McDermott in an inspiring rallying call in the post-match post-mortem. "My God he's right!!" we all thought to ourselves and redoubled our resolve for our next match.

Men's 2 Opener Was a Tough Test

Possibly the earliest match ever played in the summer season: mid April at home to Titwood. Four new faces this year for the second team. Unfortunately the first match was not good to us. Lost 1-8. Well done to Gregg McGeoch and William Steven for picking up the all important set in helping us avoid a whitewash.

Dear Member / Friends of Clarkston Bowling & Tennis Club
In June this year two of Clarkston Bowling & Tennis clubs stalwart members are getting on there bikes for the Prince and Princes of Wales Charity. They of course needing sponsorship but have come up with a novel way of giving something back to those who are willing to back their efforts for this worthwhile charity. If you are able they would be most grateful for any support.

What’s this all about?
On the 8th June Iain Coventry & Gregg McGeoch will attempt the 5 Ferries Cycle Challenge organised by ‘The Prince and Princes of Wales Hospice’. This is a serious challenge and for the past 6 months we have been knackering ourselves training on the local hills. By entering this challenge, both Gregg & Iain have agreed to raise at least £250 each for the Glasgow's Hospice and this is where we need your help.

So you are after Sponsorship?
Yes but with a difference.....You see rather than you giving money to a worthy cause for us to take the credit, each £5 you donate gives you a chance to win a prize money cannot buy..

Every £5 donated = 1 Entry to the ‘Win Gregg & Iain Competition’

What do we win?
Like the stuff above says... Gregg & iain for a Day. Provided it isn’t illegal (or will get us into trouble with our wives) we will offer the winner our graft for a day. Be it gardening / painting / Housework / DIY etc we will turn our hands to almost anything.

I’m in... How do we sponsor you for this great charity?
