(Late) West of Scotland Summer Doubles Match Report

Victory by the Seaside – 9 Sets Won – Cracking Start for Clarkston

Club Captain, Stormin Normin Robinson took his team to Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club for the first tie of the new season. Playing partner Big Al Ace McEwen was looking decidedly nervous 20 mins after the match was due to begin - our leader was missing from action. However, Al was got on the mobile and gave the Captain much needed directions. The Cap was there in seconds, brushing aside desperate requests for a team talk: “No time for such nonsense!” he roared, “Get out and hit the ball”.

This was the only advice needed. New pairing, Craig Relentless Beaton and Sushil Silky at the Net Mohan, were in in devastating form and had the job done inside an hour, losing only a handful points on service games - and Sushil making miraculous on court recovery from a dislocated knee cartilage that popped out and back in during a rally! They took the first match 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Next to battle for the cause were Ian Marathon Man Henderson (he kept all his teeth in this story), and Tom  The Drive Volley Macpherson, who toyed with their opponents in the opening set, before winning it 6-4 then running them into the ground to win the next two 6-0 & 6-1.

With Clarkston having already won the tie, all eyes were on Stormin’ Norman and Big Al. In a match that seemed to last for hours and against one very youthful opponent - who they were both giving at least 30 years each to – they closed down the tie 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.
